Why Kyoto?
Kyoto was Japan's capital for over 1,000 years — and it shows. No other city in Japan packs this density of temples, shrines, geisha districts, and traditional wooden machiya townhouses into one place. There are 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites within city limits. It's 15 minutes from Osaka by Shinkansen, making it a day-trip option — but one or two nights is far better.
