Rainbow Fountain in a Tropical Night
Last July I went to the Banpo Bridge Moonlight Rainbow Fountain at 9 p.m. Daytime had hit 34°C; even the night read 28°C. I laid out a mat with three iced Americanos from the convenience store — and the moment the fountain turned on, two hundred phones shot up around me and blocked the line of sight. The best view came after moving to the far end near Dongjak Bridge.
Earlier, at 3 p.m., I'd waited 40 minutes at Tosokchon's flagship for a KRW 25,000 abalone samgyetang. Seoul in summer means indoors by day and river by night. That rhythm is the answer.
June–August Weather & Packing
| Month | Avg High | Avg Low | Rainfall | Notes | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | June | 27°C | 18°C | 130mm | Early summer, pre-monsoon | | July | 29°C | 22°C | 395mm | Monsoon peak, ~85% humidity | | August | 30°C | 23°C | 365mm | Heatwaves, tropical nights |
- Breathable cotton or linen tops; one pair of long pants for indoor AC
- Folding umbrella is mandatory; July–August benefits from water-resistant sneakers
- Cooling sleeves, cooling scarf, portable fan
- Swimwear and slippers if your hotel has a pool (rentals run KRW 3,000–8,000)
Summer Food & Where to Eat
Samgyetang — Tosokchon (Gyeongbokgung Stn, Exit 2, 3 min) and Goryeo Samgyetang (Gyeongbokgung Stn, Exit 4, 5 min). Tosokchon waits run 40–60 min, Goryeo 20–30 min. Goryeo trends more local.
Kongguksu (cold soybean noodles) — Myeongdong Gyoja main branch (Myeongdong Stn, Exit 8, 2 min), Jinju Hoegwan (Seosomun-dong). Season starts mid-June. Weekday lunch queue at Myeongdong Gyoja ~30 min.
Naengmyeon — Eulji Myeonok (Euljiro 4-ga), Woo Rae Oak (Euljiro 3-ga). Long summer-lunch queues, but turnover is fast.
Area details for Gyeongbokgung and Seochon live in the Jongno guide; Myeongdong stays in the Myeongdong guide. If strong AC is the top criterion, see Staycation Hotels.
Summer Festivals
Banpo Moonlight Market (June–Sept, Fri–Sun) — Line 7 Express Bus Terminal, Exit 8-1, 10 min walk. ~60 food trucks; peak entry wait 8–9 p.m. Best combined with the Rainbow Fountain show (daily 8:00 and 9:00 p.m., etc.).
Seoul International Book Fair (mid-June) — Samseong Stn, Exit 6, Coex. Strong AC and 100,000+ visitors across four days.
Seoul Summer Music Festival (July–August) — Free concerts at Sejong Center and along the river.
Boramae Jazz Festival (late August) — Line 7 Boramae Station. Ticketed.
One-Day Sample Route
10 a.m. enter Gyeongbokgung (ticketing opens 8:30). 11:30 walk to Tosokchon, queue plus meal runs about two hours. 2–5 p.m. Seochon café and gallery rotation (indoor). 5 p.m. back to the hotel for a shower and a two-hour nap. 7 p.m. at the Banpo Moonlight Market; 8 p.m. for the Rainbow Fountain. 9:30 a 30-minute walk along the river, then home.
One lesson — first attempt, I skipped the nap and went straight to the river. I ended up sitting inside a convenience store with early heat-exhaustion signs. Outdoor activity between 3–5 p.m. in Seoul's summer is a losing battle.
Getting Around
- Incheon → Gyeongbokgung / Seochon AREX to Seoul Station + Line 3, ~55 min (KRW 5,050)
- Incheon → Myeongdong AREX + Line 4, ~60 min (KRW 5,050)
- Incheon → Banpo Airport bus 6020 direct, ~65 min (KRW 17,000)
- Incheon → Coex Airport bus 6103, ~80 min (KRW 17,000)
Subway AC runs strong — bring one long-sleeve layer. July–August monsoons rarely delay trains, but city buses can run behind schedule in heavy rain.
