Spring in Seoul Begins at Gwangjang Market

Two Marches ago I sat at a corner stall near the north entrance of Gwangjang Market and paid KRW 3,800 for a bowl of ssuk-guk (mugwort soup). The grandmother ladling the broth said, "This week's batch is real spring mugwort" — and it still ranks as one of the best soups I've had in Seoul. Two days later I walked Yunjung-ro during cherry-blossom peak, and that evening I held a ticket to Changgyeonggung's night opening, watching the moon drop behind the Tongmyeongjeon stone platform.

Spring in Seoul is those three things piling up in one week. Food. Blossoms. Palaces. Botch the scheduling and you miss all three; nail it and you catch all three.

March–May Weather & Packing

| Month | Avg High | Avg Low | Rain Days | Notes | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | March | 11°C | 2°C | 7 | Cold snaps, worst fine-dust readings | | April | 18°C | 8°C | 8 | Blossom peak, 10°C day/night swing | | May | 23°C | 13°C | 9 | Short-sleeve weather, occasional yellow dust |

  • March: light puffer or mid-weight coat + scarf
  • April: trench coat over long sleeves, cardigan for evenings
  • May: long-sleeve shirt + light jacket for evenings
  • Must-pack: KF94 mask (fine dust), umbrella, SPF 30+

Spring Food & Where to Eat

Mugwort soup, shepherd's-purse namul, fatsia shoots — seasonal stalls near Gwangjang Market's north gate, March–April only. Line 1 or 2 Euljiro 4-ga Station, Exit 4, 3 min walk. Eat in-market or grab takeaway to a nearby hotel room.

For stays near Gwangjang, 10–15 min walk east puts you at Dongdaemun hotels; pair with night-market action via Shopping-First Hotels. For a more formal spring tasting menu, Seochon and Samcheong-dong Korean-fine-dining rooms are the move — combine with Hanok Stays.

Spring Festivals

Yeouido Spring Flower Festival (early April) — Yunjung-ro closes to cars, pedestrian-only. Line 9 National Assembly Station, Exit 1, 5–10 min walk. Peak week draws 200,000+ visitors a day. Why a room view can beat the walk is covered in Cherry Blossom in Yeouido.

Changgyeonggung Night Opening (April–May, limited) — Runs twice a year, with Tongmyeongjeon and Myeongjeongjeon lit at night. Line 4 Hyehwa Station, Exit 4, 12 min walk. Advance booking required; sold out within 3 minutes of release. Stay details in the Jongno area guide.

Seoul Drum Festival & Han River Drone Light Show — Late April to early May, Banpo and Yeouido riverside parks.

One-Day Sample Route

10 a.m. at Gwangjang Market for mugwort soup and mung-bean pancakes. Post-lunch transfer: Line 2 Euljiro 4-ga → Line 5 Yeouinaru, 30 minutes. Rent a bike at Yeouido Hangang Park for an hour, walk Yunjung-ro for another hour. 7 p.m. at Changgyeonggung (pre-booked). Return via Line 4 from Hyehwa to the hotel.

One stamina tip — this loop totals roughly 45,000 steps. Without a one-hour nap at the hotel between lunch and dinner, your legs stop before you hit the palace gate.

Getting Around

  • Incheon → Jongno / Gwangjang AREX All-Stop to Seoul Station + Line 1 to Jongno 5-ga, ~65 min (KRW 4,600)
  • Incheon → Yeouido Airport bus 6030 direct, ~70 min (KRW 17,000)
  • Gimpo → Yeouido Line 9 Express, ~15 min (KRW 1,550)
  • Blossom peak weekends Yeouido vehicle access restricted; taxi entry blocked — use subway

Fine-dust-alert days: masks aren't mandatory on AREX or subway, but recommended.

FAQ

Q. Are Seoul cherry-blossom dates consistent year to year? They shift between March 25 and April 5. Korea Meteorological Administration peaks: April 2 in 2024, March 31 in 2025.

Q. When does mugwort soup leave Gwangjang menus? Mid-March through early May is the standard window. Many stalls rotate to summer menus after mid-May.

Q. How do I book Changgyeonggung night openings? Royal Palaces and Tombs Center official booking portal. Runs twice yearly (spring and fall); opens at noon and clears out within 10 minutes.

Q. Do Seoul spring rates spike the whole season? Only the peak blossom week (late March–early April) runs at maximum. Mid-April onward reverts to off-peak.

Q. Should I cancel over fine-dust forecasts? March is worst; mid-April improves. Pivot to indoor anchors — Gwangjang Market, exhibitions, staycations are largely unaffected.
