South Korea's Tax-Free Shopping System

Foreign tourists shopping in South Korea can reclaim a portion of the 10% VAT through the Tax-Free Store (사후면세점) network.

Two refund methods are available:

Step-by-Step: Standard Airport Refund

Step 1 — Shop at a Tax-Free store

Look for the Tax Free sign at the entrance. Show your passport and request a Tax Refund Voucher. Major shopping areas — Myeongdong, Dongdaemun, COEX, Lotte World Mall — have dense concentrations of Tax-Free stores.

Step 2 — Airport refund at Incheon

Three options are available at Incheon Airport:

Step 3 — Receive your refund

Cash (Korean won or foreign currency) or credit card credit. A small service fee is deducted from cash refunds.

Downtown duty-free shops like Lotte or Shilla offer a broader luxury brand selection at lower base prices than Tax-Free stores. Factor in the airport pick-up step when planning your schedule.

Notes

  • Refund vouchers are valid for 3 months from the purchase date.
  • Goods must be unused and carried out of Korea.
  • Korean nationals and foreign residents are not eligible.
