Korea Weather Month by Month: When to Visit (2025 Guide)

South Korea experiences four distinct seasons, and the best time to visit depends heavily on which weather, crowds, and experiences you're after. Here's a month-by-month breakdown for planning your trip.

Quick Season Overview

Month-by-Month Breakdown

January

Temperature: Seoul –5 to 2°C | Busan 2–8°C | Jeju 4–10°C
Rainfall: Low
Crowds: Low (post-holiday quiet)

January is Korea's coldest month. Seoul can dip below –10°C during cold snaps. However, it's also the emptiest tourist month — hotel prices drop and major sites are uncrowded. Ski resorts (Yongpyong, High1) are in full swing. Great for budget travelers and ski enthusiasts.

Pack: Heavy winter coat, thermals, gloves.

February

Temperature: Seoul –3 to 5°C
Rainfall: Low
Crowds: Low–Medium (Lunar New Year spike)

Similar to January but slightly warmer. Lunar New Year (Seollal) falls in late January or February — many businesses close for 2–4 days and domestic travel spikes sharply. Avoid traveling on those exact days if you can.

March

Temperature: Seoul 3–12°C
Rainfall: Low–Medium
Crowds: Medium (rising)

Spring officially begins. Early March is still cold but warming rapidly by the end of the month. First cherry blossoms appear in Jeju around late March. A good time to visit before the spring rush.

April

Temperature: Seoul 10–18°C
Rainfall: Low–Medium
Crowds: High (cherry blossom peak)

April is arguably the best month to visit Korea. Cherry blossoms peak in Seoul around early April, transforming parks like Yeouido, Namsan, and Bukchon into pink corridors. Book accommodation months in advance — prices surge during blossom week.

Post-blossom (mid-to-late April) is calmer, still beautiful with spring greenery.

May

Temperature: Seoul 16–23°C
Rainfall: Low
Crowds: Medium–High

Warm, sunny, and comfortable. Buddha's Birthday (late May) brings temple festivals and lantern parades — one of Korea's most beautiful cultural events. Hiking season peaks. An excellent alternative to April with fewer crowds and no blossom chaos.

June

Temperature: Seoul 20–27°C
Rainfall: Medium–High (monsoon building)
Crowds: Medium

Early June is pleasant, but by mid-to-late June the monsoon (jangma) season begins. Expect intermittent heavy rain and high humidity. Not the most comfortable time, but crowds are lower and accommodation prices dip before the summer holidays.

July

Temperature: Seoul 24–31°C
Rainfall: Very High (monsoon peak)
Crowds: High

Peak monsoon. Seoul averages 400mm of rain in July — concentrated in heavy daily downpours. The upside: nature turns intensely green, waterfalls run full, and rice paddies are at their most vivid. Plan for indoor activities (palaces, museums, cafes) and carry a compact umbrella everywhere.

Busan: Beach season begins. Haeundae and Gwangalli beaches open with full facilities.

August

Temperature: Seoul 25–33°C
Rainfall: Decreasing (late monsoon)
Crowds: Very High (Korean summer holidays)

The hottest month. Humidity remains high. Korean school holidays (late July–August) create domestic travel spikes — Busan beaches are packed. Visit Busan for the beach atmosphere, or head to Jeju for summer festivals.

Late August weather improves markedly as the monsoon ends.

September

Temperature: Seoul 18–26°C
Rainfall: Low
Crowds: Medium–High

Post-monsoon perfection. Clear blue skies, comfortable temperatures, dramatically lower rainfall. Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving, late September or October) is a major holiday — similar to Lunar New Year, businesses close and transport fills up.

Best month for outdoor activities: hiking Seoraksan, cycling the Han River, exploring coastal areas.

October

Temperature: Seoul 12–20°C
Rainfall: Low
Crowds: High (foliage season)

October rivals April as the best month to visit. Autumn foliage transforms mountains and temples — Naejangsan, Seoraksan, and Bukhansan are stunning. Crisp air, low humidity, and deep blue skies make sightseeing a pleasure.

Crowds peak in mid-October. Book early.

November

Temperature: Seoul 5–14°C
Rainfall: Low
Crowds: Medium (dropping)

Early November catches the tail end of autumn colour. By mid-November, trees are bare and temperatures drop sharply. A transitional month — quieter than October with good deals on accommodation. First snow of the season may appear in late November in northern areas.

December

Temperature: Seoul –2 to 5°C
Rainfall: Low (light snow possible)
Crowds: Low–Medium (Christmas spike)

Cold and quiet except around Christmas (December 24–26), when cities light up with decorations and Seoul's cafes fill. Ski season begins in earnest. Gyeongbokgung and other palaces look beautiful in light snow.

Budget travelers: December and January offer the lowest hotel prices of the year outside of holiday dates.

Regional Variation

Seoul: Full four-season experience. Coldest winters, hottest summers, most dramatic seasonal changes.
Busan: 3–5°C warmer than Seoul year-round. Milder winters, excellent summer beach season.
Jeju: Subtropical — mild winters (rarely below 5°C), hot humid summers, typhoon risk in August–September.
