Korea Cherry Blossom Guide 2025: When, Where & How to See the Best Blooms

Cherry blossom season (벚꽃 시즌, beotkkot sizeun) is the most anticipated travel event on the Korean calendar. For roughly 7–10 days each spring, cities across the country transform under canopies of pale pink and white blossoms. This guide covers everything you need to plan the perfect blossom trip.

Best Viewing Spots

Seoul

1. Yeouido Spring Flower Festival (여의도 봄꽃축제)
The largest and most famous blossom event in Korea. Yeouido Hangang Park becomes a linear boulevard of cherry trees along the riverside, with food stalls, performances, and lighting at night. The main street (Yeouido-ro) is often closed to traffic during peak bloom.

Access: Line 5 or 9, Yeouido Station, Exit 1 or 3.
Best time: Weekday morning (before 10:00) or evening (after 18:00 for the lights).

2. Namsan Mountain (남산)
The walking paths that circle Namsan are lined with cherry trees. Start at Namsan Botanic Garden (near Chungmuro Station) and walk up — the path eventually reaches Namsan Seoul Tower. The combination of cherry blossoms and city skyline is particularly striking.

Access: Line 3 or 4, Chungmuro Station, then 15-minute walk up.

3. Seokchon Lake (석촌호수) — Jamsil
Two artificial lakes in Songpa-gu, ringed entirely by cherry trees. Slightly less crowded than Yeouido but equally beautiful. Lotte World Tower rises dramatically behind the blossoms for iconic photo compositions.

Access: Line 2 or 8, Jamsil Station, Exit 3.

4. Changdeokgung Secret Garden Area
The area approaching Changdeokgung Palace from Anguk (Line 3) along the wall path (Wonseo-dong) has beautiful blossom-lined alleys. Quieter than the river parks.

5. Gyeongbokgung — Outer Walls
The streets around Gyeongbokgung Palace, particularly on the north and west sides, have mature cherry trees. Hanbok rental shops see their longest queues during blossom week.

Jeju Island

Jeju Airport Road (제주공항 진입로)
Arriving in Jeju during late March, you'll often be greeted by cherry blossoms lining the airport access road.

Hanlim Park (한림공원)
Cherry trees mixed with subtropical plants — not the classic Seoul street scene but beautiful in a completely different way.

Canola Flowers (유채꽃): Jeju's other spring spectacle. The yellow canola (유채) fields bloom simultaneously with the cherry blossoms, often in the same frame. Noksan-ro Road is the most famous spot for canola + cherry blossom combinations.

Busan

Hwamyeong-ro (화명로) Cherry Blossom Road
A 4 km stretch of road near Hwamyeong New Town in northern Busan, entirely canopied by cherry trees. Less touristy than Seoul spots.

Gyeonghua Station (경화역) near Jinhae
Jinhae (창원 진해구) is the undisputed cherry blossom capital of Korea. The Gunhang-je Festival draws 2+ million visitors annually. The famous Gyeonghua Station with its tree-lined tracks is a 1-hour train ride from Busan.

Planning Tips

Book Accommodation 2–3 Months Ahead

Hotels in Yeouido, Hongdae, and Myeongdong sell out fast during blossom week. Prices can double. Book as soon as the KMA releases its first forecast (typically early March).

Go on Weekdays

Yeouido on a weekend at peak bloom is genuinely overwhelming. If your schedule allows, mid-week (Tuesday–Thursday) is dramatically more pleasant.

Evening Viewing

Many parks light the cherry trees at night. Evening viewing from 19:00–21:00 is beautiful and far less crowded than afternoon. Bring a light jacket — temperatures drop after sundown.

After Peak Bloom: Petals Falling

The day petals begin to fall (beotkkot nuri, 벚꽃 비 — "cherry blossom rain") is arguably the most beautiful. Streets carpeted in pink petals, trees still half-full, fewer crowds. This phase lasts 2–4 days.

Check the Forecast Obsessively

The KMA publishes a cherry blossom forecast starting in mid-February. Korean weather apps and Naver Weather will show predicted first bloom and peak bloom dates for major cities.

What to Eat During Blossom Season

Vendors at blossom festivals sell seasonal snacks:

  • 벚꽃 마카롱 (cherry blossom macarons) — pink, floral
  • 봄 딸기 빙수 (spring strawberry shaved ice) — bingsu cafes go full spring mode
  • 버찌 음료 (cherry-flavored drinks) — widespread in April
  • Standard Yeouido picnic fare: convenience store gimbap, fried chicken, makgeolli (rice wine)
