Jeju Island 4-Day Itinerary: Hallasan, Seongsan, Beaches & Hidden Gems (2025)

Jeju Island (제주도) is South Korea's largest island and most popular domestic travel destination — a subtropical escape with a dormant volcano at its center, dramatic lava coastlines, UNESCO World Heritage sites, and food that's distinct from the mainland. Here's how to make the most of 4 days.

Getting There & Around

Flight: 1 hour from Seoul (Gimpo or Incheon). Book Korean Air, Jeju Air, or T'way Air. Jeju International Airport is small and easy to navigate.

Transport on Jeju: Rent a car (essential for this itinerary). International Driving Permit required for non-Korean license holders. Alternatively, book a private driver for a day or join organized day tours from Jeju City.

Accommodation bases: Jeju City (north — most transport, restaurants) or Seogwipo (south — calmer, scenic). This itinerary uses Jeju City as a base.

Day 1: Jeju City Arrival + East Coast

Arrive morning or midday

13:00 — Dongmun Traditional Market (동문시장)
The best introduction to Jeju food culture. Try:

  • Gamgwi (salted mackerel) — Jeju specialty
  • Heukdwaeji (black pork) snacks
  • Haenyeo (female diver) dried seafood stalls
  • Hallabong (Korean tangerine) — sweet, seedless, endemic to Jeju

15:00 — Manjanggul Cave (만장굴)
One of the world's longest lava tube caves. The accessible section (1 km) is well-lit and maintained. The temperature inside is a constant 11°C — bring a light jacket even in summer. The highlight is a 7.6 m-high lava column (the world's largest) at the end of the lit section.

Nearest town: Gujwa-eup (40 min drive east of Jeju City)

17:00 — Sunrise Peak Coast Drive
Drive toward Seongsan for sunset views. The east coast between Manjanggul and Seongsan is dramatic.

Evening: Dinner in Jeju City
Return to Jeju City for dinner. Try heukdwaeji BBQ on Heukdwaeji Street (흑돼지거리), near downtown.

Day 2: Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak)

Early start recommended (before crowds)

07:00 — Seongsan Ilchulbong (성산일출봉)
UNESCO World Heritage Site. A 182 m volcanic tuff cone that rose from the ocean 5,000 years ago. The hike to the rim takes 20–30 minutes on paved stairs. The view of the crater bowl and surrounding ocean is extraordinary at any time of day, but sunrise (hence the name "Sunrise Peak") is legendary — arrive by 06:00 for the best experience.

Entry fee: KRW 2,000 adults. First entry: 07:00 (gates vary by season).

09:00 — Haenyeo (해녀) Performance at Seongsan
Haenyeo are Jeju's traditional female free divers, diving without oxygen tanks to harvest abalone, conch, and sea urchin. Live demonstrations happen near the Seongsan port. The diver culture is UNESCO-listed intangible heritage.

11:00 — Olle Trail Section 1 (올레길 1코스)
Jeju Olle is a network of coastal walking trails around the island. Section 1 runs from Seongsan to Siheung — a 15 km walk with ocean views. Do a portion (3–5 km) or the full trail if fit.

Afternoon: Bijarim Forest (비자림)
A forest of bijarim (Torreya) trees, some over 800 years old. The 2.5 km loop through moss-covered ancient trees is one of Jeju's most atmospheric walks. Great in any weather.

Evening: Seogwipo dinner
Stay south for dinner in Seogwipo. Try jeonbok juk (전복죽, abalone porridge) — Jeju's most celebrated traditional dish, rich and silky.

Day 3: Hallasan National Park + South Coast

Morning: Hallasan (한라산) Hike
Hallasan (1,950 m) is the highest peak in South Korea and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Two main trails reach the summit crater (Baengnokdam Lake):

TrailLength (one way)Time upDifficulty
Seongpanak9.6 km4.5 hoursModerate
Gwaneumsa8.7 km4 hoursDifficult

Important: Last entry for summit trails is 12:00. Start by 07:00–08:00 to safely complete a summit and return before park closing.

If a summit is too ambitious, the Eorimok Trail (5.8 km one-way to the sub-summit Witseoreum shelter, views of the crater) is a beautiful moderate alternative.

Afternoon: Jungmun Tourist Complex
After descending, visit the Jungmun area on Jeju's south coast:

  • Cheonjiyeon Waterfall (천지연폭포) — a dramatic 23 m waterfall in a lush gorge, 10 min walk from the parking area
  • Jeju World Cup Stadium — if interested in architecture or a rest stop
  • Yakcheonsa Temple (약천사) — one of Korea's largest Buddhist temples, striking multi-story architecture

Evening: Seogwipo night market
The Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market (매일올레시장) has excellent street food stalls open until 22:00.

Day 4: West Coast & Departure

Morning: Hyeopjae Beach (협재해수욕장)
The most beautiful beach on Jeju — turquoise water, white sand, views of Biyangdo Island offshore. Even in shoulder season, the water color is exceptional. The village behind the beach has good cafes.

Adjacent: Gwakji Beach — slightly quieter alternative, 2 km away.

10:30 — Biyangdo Island Day Trip (optional)
A small ferry from Hyeopjae to Biyangdo Island runs a few times daily. The island has a dramatic volcanic crater, coastal walking trail, and essentially no crowds. Allow 3–4 hours for the ferry + walk + return.

12:30 — Hallim Park (한림공원)
A well-maintained botanical park with lava tube caves (Hwanggeumdong and Hyeopjaegul), palm trees, and subtropical plant collections. Good for families.

Afternoon: Airport departure
Allow 45–60 minutes to reach Jeju Airport from the west coast. Return the rental car and depart.

Jeju Food Checklist

Don't leave without trying:

  • 흑돼지 (black pork BBQ)
  • 전복죽 (abalone porridge)
  • 한라봉 (Hallabong tangerine)
  • 고기국수 (pork broth noodle soup)
  • 빙수 (bingsu, shaved ice — particularly the Oreum version in Jeju cafes)
  • 옥돔구이 (grilled red tile fish — Jeju's most iconic fish)
