Busan Weekend Trip from Japan: Ferry, Flights & What to Do (2025)
Busan is Korea's second city and its beach capital — a port city of dramatic hillside neighborhoods, fresh seafood straight from the sea, and a pace of life that feels distinctly different from Seoul. For travelers based in Japan, Busan is one of the most accessible international destinations available: a short flight or an overnight ferry from Fukuoka, and you're in a completely different culinary and cultural world.
Getting There from Japan
Option 1: Fukuoka → Busan Ferry
The Fukuoka–Busan ferry route is one of Asia's great short international crossings.
| Operator | Type | Duration | Frequency | Price (approx) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Camellia Line | Overnight car/passenger ferry | ~6 hours | Daily | ¥10,000–16,000 one-way |
| Beetle (JR Kyushu) | Hydrofoil (fast) | ~3 hours 10 min | 2–3x daily | ¥13,500–16,000 one-way |
Camellia Line: Departs Hakata Port at 17:00, arrives Busan International Ferry Terminal at 08:30. Return: departs Busan 19:00, arrives Hakata 08:30. Cabins available; a budget cabin bunk is economical and practical. Book at camellia-line.co.jp.
Beetle: High-speed hydrofoil, daytime crossings. No cabin but much faster. More convenient for a quick weekend. Book through JR Kyushu or Klook.
Port access in Fukuoka: Camellia Line uses Hakata Port (博多港) — taxi from Hakata Station (~15 min) or bus. Beetle departs from the Hakata Port International Terminal.
Port in Busan: Both arrive at Busan International Ferry Terminal, connected to Busan Station by subway (Line 1, ~10 minutes).
Option 2: Fly
| Route | Airlines | Duration | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Osaka (KIX) → Busan (PUS) | Peach, Jeju Air, Air Busan | ~1h 20min | Multiple daily flights |
| Tokyo (NRT/HND) → Busan (PUS) | Jeju Air, Asiana, Korean Air | ~1h 45min | Check budget LCC fares |
| Nagoya (NGO) → Busan | Air Busan | ~1h 30min | Less frequent |
Book flights 4–8 weeks in advance for best fares. Busan Gimhae Airport (PUS) is connected to Busan Station by the Airport Railroad (BGLRT) — about 30 minutes.
2-Day Busan Itinerary
Day 1: Seafood, Markets & the Beach
09:00 — Jagalchi Fish Market (자갈치시장) Korea's largest seafood market is Busan's defining sensory experience. The covered market building overflows with live crabs, sea cucumbers, squid, octopus, and flatfish in enormous tanks. Upstairs restaurants will cook what you choose from the floor below. Arrive early for the freshest selection.
Nearest station: Jagalchi Station, Line 1.
11:00 — Gwangbok-ro Street & BIFF Square Walk from Jagalchi to BIFF Square (Busan International Film Festival plaza), embedded with handprints of Korean film stars. The street is lined with ssiat hotteok (씨앗호떡) vendors — a Busan street food specialty of sweet hotteok filled with seeds and honey. Queue expected.
13:00 — Lunch: Milmyeon or Dwaeji Gukbap Two Busan lunch institutions:
- 밀면 (milmyeon): Cold wheat noodles in a light beef broth — Busan's own noodle, distinct from Pyongyang-style naengmyeon
- 돼지국밥 (dwaeji gukbap): Pork bone soup with rice — a Busan specialty, hearty and warming
Gukbap street near Seomyeon (서면역) has multiple specialists side by side.
15:00 — Gamcheon Culture Village (감천문화마을) A hillside neighborhood painted in primary colors, Gamcheon is Busan's most photographed area. Former refugee settlement turned art village — murals, sculpture gardens, small galleries, and sweeping views of the port below. Allow 2 hours to wander. It's steep: wear comfortable shoes.
Access: Bus 1-1, 2 from Toseong-dong or Saha-gu Office.
18:00 — Haeundae Beach (해운대해수욕장) Korea's most famous beach — 1.5 km of sand facing the South Sea. Less stunning in winter, but the beachside restaurants and bars are open year-round. Sunset over the beach with a cold makgeolli is a Busan rite.
Evening: Gwangalli Beach & Eonyang Bulgogi Gwangalli Beach (광안리) is the hipper, smaller alternative to Haeundae, with the Gwangan Bridge illuminated at night. The bridge reflection at night is spectacular. Have dinner at one of the pojangmacha (tent restaurants) with a view.
Day 2: Mountains, Temples & Departure
08:00 — Haedong Yonggungsa Temple (해동 용궁사) A Buddhist temple built directly on sea cliffs north of Haeundae — a rare coastal temple with dramatic ocean views. Arrive early before the crowds. The 10-minute walk from the bus stop passes stone lanterns along a forested path.
Access: Bus 181 from Haeundae Station.
11:00 — Beomeosa Temple (범어사) If Haedong is dramatic, Beomeosa is serene — a 7th-century mountain temple on the slopes of Geumjeongsan. The approach through pine forest is beautiful in any season. Temple stay programs are available for those interested.
Access: Line 1 to Beomeosa Station, then bus 90.
13:00 — Seomyeon for Lunch & Shopping Seomyeon (서면) is Busan's busiest commercial district — department stores, underground shopping malls, and a dense food court under the station. Good for last-minute souvenir shopping.
15:00 — Head to Port/Airport Allow sufficient time: ferry boarding usually begins 1.5–2 hours before departure; flights require 1.5 hours at Gimhae Airport.
Practical Notes
Transport in Busan: The T-money card (used for Seoul metro) works on Busan metro, buses, and city transport — buy or top up at any convenience store. Single-day metro passes are available.
Accommodation: Haeundae has beach-view hotels (pricier); Seomyeon is central and more affordable; Nampo-dong (near Jagalchi) is closest to the ferry terminal and traditional markets.
Language: English is less common in Busan than Seoul. Naver Papago app for translation; pointing at menus works well in most restaurants.
Weather: Busan is slightly warmer than Seoul year-round. Summers are humid with occasional typhoon risk (August). Spring and autumn are ideal.
