Andong & Hahoe Village: Korea's UNESCO Folk Heritage (2025)

Andong (안동) is the spiritual home of Korean Confucianism — a city in North Gyeongsang Province that has preserved traditional philosophy, architecture, and social customs more comprehensively than anywhere else in Korea. At its center is Hahoe Folk Village, a riverside settlement that has changed little in six centuries. This guide covers how to get there, what to see, and how to experience Andong's extraordinary cultural depth.

Getting to Andong

From Seoul

KTX: Seoul Station → Andong Station — approximately 2 hours 10 minutes
ITX Saemaeul: Approximately 2 hours 40 minutes; less expensive than KTX
Express bus: Dong Seoul or Central City Terminal → Andong — approximately 2.5–3 hours
Fare: KTX approximately KRW 27,000–35,000 one-way

From Busan / Daegu

Train: Busan → Andong via Daegu — approximately 2 hours (change at Dongdaegu)
Bus: Busan Nopo-dong Terminal → Andong — approximately 2 hours 30 minutes

Andong Station to Hahoe Village

Bus 46 departs from in front of Andong Bus Terminal (a 10-minute walk from the train station, or take a taxi to the terminal). Bus journey: approximately 30 minutes. Last bus from Hahoe returns around 18:30 — check current schedule at Andong City website.

Taxi from Andong: Approximately KRW 18,000–22,000 one-way. A round-trip taxi with waiting time is a practical option for solo travelers.

Hahoe Folk Village (하회마을)

Overview

Hahoe sits in a bend of the Nakdong River (hence its name — hahoe means "water circling around") in a setting of extraordinary natural beauty. The village layout has remained essentially unchanged since the mid-Joseon period: lanes of thatched (choga) homes for commoners and grand tiled (giwa) houses for the yangban (scholar-gentry) class, arranged by traditional geomantic principles.

UNESCO status: Inscribed in 2010, along with Yangdong Village near Gyeongju, as Historic Villages of Korea.

Entry: KRW 5,000 adults. The ferry across the river to Buyongdae Cliff is included.

Hours: Sunrise to sunset; main access road accessible by bus from 09:00.

What to See

Village Interior Walk The main lane runs from the entrance through the heart of the village. Notable stops:

  • Yangban Houses (충효당, Chunghyodang): The Ryu family's ancestral manor — a large tiled-roof compound with open courtyard, reception halls, and gardens. This house has hosted Queen Elizabeth II (1999) and George W. Bush (2009) as guests.

  • Thatched Houses (초가집): The curved, low-roofed homes of the commoner class. Some are still occupied; others have been converted to guesthouses or craft workshops.

  • Samsindan Altar: A shamanistic tree shrine at the village center — predating the Confucian settlement, a reminder of the layered spiritual traditions that coexist in rural Korea.

Buyongdae Cliff (부용대) Take the small ferry (포) across the Nakdong River (runs 09:00–17:00, last return at 17:30) to reach Buyongdae — a white sandstone cliff 64 m above the river. The view down onto the village's distinctive roof curve and river bend is the most-photographed image in Andong. Walk 10 minutes uphill from the ferry landing.

Hahoe Mask Dance Performance Every Saturday and Sunday at 14:00 (March through November), the Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori mask dance is performed in the outdoor theater near the village entrance. The performance runs approximately 60 minutes and uses English subtitles during tourist season.

The masks themselves (Hahoe Masks, 하회탈) are National Treasure No. 121 — 12 surviving masks from the 12th century, among the oldest wooden masks in Korea. Replicas are sold throughout Andong as souvenirs; the originals are in the National Museum of Korea.

Andong City Sites

Dosan Seowon (도산서원)

A 30-minute drive from Andong City, Dosan Seowon is the Confucian academy founded by Yi Hwang (이황, Toegye), 16th-century Korea's greatest Confucian philosopher. His portrait appears on the KRW 1,000 note.

The academy complex — lecture halls, dormitories, ceremonial hall, and garden pond — is beautifully preserved along the Nakdong River. UNESCO World Heritage listed as part of the Seowon network inscribed in 2019.

Getting there: Bus from Andong or taxi (approximately KRW 20,000 from Andong).

Andong Traditional Culture Complex (안동민속촌)

An outdoor museum near the city center that relocated traditional buildings from across the Andong region before a dam flooded them. Covers a range of architectural types. Combined with the Andong Folk Museum next door, this provides context for the Hahoe visit.

Bongjeongsa Temple (봉정사)

A UNESCO World Heritage temple complex on Cheondeungsan Mountain — one of Korea's oldest surviving wooden structures (main hall dates to the 13th century). The walk through pine forest to reach it is as rewarding as the arrival.

Access: Bus or taxi from Andong city center (approximately 30 minutes).

Andong Food

Andong cuisine is some of Korea's most distinctive — heavily influenced by Confucian eating tradition, with emphasis on fermented and preserved foods.

Andong Jjimdak (안동찜닭): The signature dish — a braised chicken stew with glass noodles, vegetables, and a dark soy-based sauce. The Andong Jjimdak Alley (안동찜닭골목) near Andong Central Market has multiple restaurants specializing in this dish. Medium heat; shareable between two people.

Andong Ganjang Gejang (간장게장): Raw crabs marinated in soy sauce — called "rice thief" for how addictively it pairs with white rice. A delicacy, not universally appreciated by first-timers, but worth trying.

Soju (소주 — Andong style): Traditional Andong soju is distilled differently from the industrial soju served in Seoul — stronger (45% ABV), clearer, and more complex. Only available in Andong and specialty traditional liquor shops in Seoul.

Heotjesabap (헛제삿밥): A Confucian ritual meal repurposed as a restaurant dish — rice, tofu, vegetables, dried fish, and greens arranged as they would be for an ancestral rite. Austere and beautiful.

Staying Overnight

Hahoe village offers hanok guesthouses (minsok) — staying in a traditional thatched or tiled house with ondol (underfloor heating) and communal dining. Breakfast and dinner are typically included. Prices: KRW 70,000–120,000 per night for two. Booking: Naver or direct with Andong City tourism.

Staying overnight allows evening atmosphere in the village (most day tourists leave by 17:00) and the morning light on thatched roofs in mist or frost.

Andong International Mask Dance Festival

Held in late September (typically the last week), the Andong Mask Dance Festival is one of Korea's most famous cultural festivals — mask dances from around the world perform alongside Korean traditional forms. The Hahoe village context makes the Korean performances particularly resonant.

Book accommodation 2–3 months ahead for festival dates.
