Best Checked Luggage 2026 — 26" & 28" Buying Guide

How to pick a 26 or 28-inch checked suitcase for week-long trips. PC vs PP vs ABS shells, 4-wheel spinners, and airline weight limits explained.

When a 26" or 28" Checked Bag Wins

Carry-ons (20–22") cover 2–3 night trips, but 7+ nights, winter travel, or family vacations need the 80–100 L capacity of a 26 or 28-inch checked case — especially when you add souvenirs or bulky outerwear.

What to Check Before Buying

1. 26" vs 28" — match to trip length 26-inch (about 80 L) suits trips up to 7 nights. 28-inch (about 100 L) handles 7+ nights or winter clothing. Both are checked-only and cannot fly in the cabin.

2. Weight — under 3.5 kg empty Korean Air and Asiana economy allow 23 kg per checked bag. A 5 kg empty case leaves only 18 kg for contents. Target a shell weight of 3.5 kg or less.

3. 4-wheel spinner required A fully loaded 28-inch easily exceeds 20 kg. Anything other than a 4-wheel double-spinner will be miserable in airports. Avoid 2-wheel inline rollers at this size.

4. Shell — PP vs PC vs ABS

  • PP (polypropylene): lightest, highest impact resistance, pricier
  • PC (polycarbonate): rigid, water-resistant, moderate weight
  • ABS / PC-ABS blend: cheapest, lower durability, fine for 1–2 trips per year

For a first 28-inch, pick PP or PC hardshell.

FAQ

Q. 26" or 28"? Pick 26" (80 L) for trips up to 7 nights. Go 28" (100 L) for 10+ nights or winter trips with a puffer jacket. A fully loaded 28" risks the 23 kg cap, so start with a shell under 3.5 kg.

Q. PC or PP — which lasts longer? PP wins on impact resistance but scratches show faster. Given how baggage handlers treat checked bags, PP is the long-term winner despite the higher price.

Q. What do overweight fees cost? Korean Air and Asiana charge roughly USD 10–20 per extra kg depending on route. Pack to 21 kg max to leave a safety margin.
